chanelfavoritelookFrom Russia (and Paris), with Love — Karl Lagerfeld readily admits his Russian inspirations for this pre-fall collection: the Ballets Russes, Constructivism, Byzantine jewelry, and Slavic folklore. Aptly named “Paris-Moscou”, the collection was full of red, over-the-top furs and embellishments, leather leggings, and fringe. I absolutely was fascinated by the amazing headresses and thrilled with the revival of muffs.
Although it was nearly impossible to pick one look as my favorite, I ended up going with the show-closer, this amazing dress and head piece that succinctly melded several different trends of the collection into one. I loved the way the scalloped layers of the bodice appeared to be breaking away from the ombre portion of the dress.

What do you get when you mix Marc Jacobs’ ground-breaking grunge looks of the 1990’s with the iconic and classy style of Chanel? Grunge-chic, naturally. We’ve spotted the look on celebrity fashion icons such as Mary-Kate Olsen, Lindsay Lohan, and Rachel Bilson, who are all donning Kurt Cobain- inspired plaid flannel paired with leggings and sky-high heels. If you still love Nirvana but dream of quilted purses, or if like us, just have style ADD, then this look is perfect for you! The key to achieving this style is to successfully contrast girly pieces with edgy and grungy pieces, and of course Fashion Pulse will show you how to do it!

To begin you’ll need a basic black cami, like this Cassandra Lace Cami from dELiA’s for $19.50, and some black tights (we swear by the UO Supersoft Bamboo Tights, $18 from Urban Outfitters). Next, add a colorful high–waisted tulip skirt. The pop of color will counter all of the black that you’ll be wearing with this outfit, and the tulip shape adds femininity. American Apparel’s Polyester Micro-Fiber Tulip Skirt, for $28, is perfect for this piece.

Now for the main grunge ingredient: over the tank and the skirt, layer a long sleeved plaid flannel shirt, and roll up the sleeves. We prefer the men’s Mountain Pond plaid shirt, $80 at Abercrombie and Fitch (search “mens” then click “shirts”), or you can always just “borrow” one from your dad or boyfriend! The shirt should look over-sized and a little sloppy to juxtapose the chic aspect of the look. Fasten on a black belt, like this Fashion Focus Black Croc-Stamped Patent Wide Belt from Bluefly for $27, over the flannel to accentuate your feminine features under that baggy shirt. If you want to expose the cami, leave the flannel unbuttoned and peel back the front shirttails before putting the belt on.

The Midnight Suede Bowtie Bootie, $88 from Urban Outfitters is the perfect shoe for this outfit because they’ve got an adorable bow, yet still have a pretty hardcore aesthetic. Finally, to top it off, add a Blair Waldorf-like black headband like this one from Forever 21 for $2.80, and voila! You are now equipped to rock out grunge-chic!

I am obsessed, and I mean obsessed with the Chanel two-toned opaque tights from the Fall/Winter 2008 collections, and are even more in love with the sheer version that paraded down the spring 2009 runways this season. chaneltightsfa08As far as practicality goes, the thicker version is more appropriate for the wind-tunnel gusts and frosty New York winter, but shall we dare pay the price tag — that soar above $200 for these babies? You know the answer to that. You can get the best of both sheer and opaque worlds via these Either Or Tights for a whopping $14 at Urban Outfitters. They’re  sure to fit my desire for the trend, as well as my budget! Okay, so they don’t have the chic littel “double C” logo across the ankle, but I am willing to spare a few hundred for that, don’t you think a more worthy investment might be to get a cute new outfit to accompany the tights instead?

How many times can the classic Chanel suit, shoes, and bag be reworked and refreshed each season? Apparently, an infinite amount, as Karl Largerfeld has once again made the staples of the maintain their covetable classification. New shapes, details, and accessories are the way to add excitement to the storied house, and Karl and his team didn’t hold back one bit this season. From boudoir-like shoes decked out with feathers to new shape and chain positioning for the quilted signature bags, there’s plenty here to set Chanel-lover’s hearts ablaze. The suits received the festoon treatment, with oversized ties, bows, and detailing that you know came from King Karl himself — heavy chainlinks! And last, this review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the jewelry; it managed to accomplish both vintage and futuristic elements that worked with tweed suits,  trenches, long, loose cardigans, and prim blouses.

The music at fashion week shows not only sets the tone for the collection, but almost equally as important is that it can get the sleep-deprived editors/buyers/stylists tapping their stiletto-ed heels to the beat, creating a fond, memorable experience for a show that otherwise can blur in with the other 60+ collections seen in a week!
